CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“I’m still with him,” Anna finally admits the truth.

From my position outside the study at the Mayberry house, I listen to their conversation. Zeke has mooned after her all afternoon and trailed her like a lovesick puppy, while Anna has done her best to avoid him. When he’d cornered her about ten minutes ago, I thought about bursting in and separating them. That was until my curiosity got the better of me, and I waited to see how she handled him.

So far, she’s kept him in the dark about the dirt I have on Sander.

I don’t know if her abrupt change in behaviour was caused by the persuasion offered by my cock or if it was the text message I sent after our interlude that convinced her. All I know is that Anna has been the perfect girlfriend all day, and the leftover pain from her betrayal yesterday has almost receded.

Today has been a good day.

“I’m sorry, Zeke, so sorry.”

I hear quick footsteps, so I shuffle around to get a better look through the small crack left when they didn’t fully close the door behind themselves. Anna has gone to Zeke and taken hold of his arm. Grinding my teeth, I’m about to give in to my urge to get between them when he loses his temper.

“Why? Is it because he’s fucking rich? Because of his famous last name? Because he treats you like a fucking piece of shit, and you secretly get off on it?” he asks, peeling her fingers from his arm and stepping away from her. Fury that could rival mine from yesterday paints his face. It warms the dark recesses of my mind. The good guy is coming apart at the seams. “Or is it because I’m a fucking dumbarse biker who you’re too good for?”

His anger is sublime, but it’s the heartbreak in his eyes that really gets me going.

I can hear the anguish in his voice when he verbalises the last question.

Seems even he knows Anna is worthy of someone better than him.

Someone like me.

“It’s not like that,” she cries. “It’s complicated—”

He shouts back at her. “It wasn’t complicated when I was—”

A hand grabs me by the collar of my shirt, and a familiar arsehole drags me down the hallway. I lash out with my fists, more upset at missing the details of Zeke and Anna’s argument than I am about being accosted by Sander.

“What do you want?” I ask once he’s slammed me against the wall. “If you can’t tell, I’m quite busy.”

“You’re fucking sick.”

I smirk. “Well, yeah.”

My droll admission throws him off balance. The fight leaves him, and he slaps my shoulders with his open palms, then steps away from me. Leaning against the wall on the opposite side of the hallway, he drags his hands through his dark hair.

“Please leave her alone,” Sander begs.

“I can’t. I love her.”

His despair infiltrates the air between us. His shoulders slump, and he drags in a rough breath.

“I know you’re only doing this to get back at me.
